CHAPTER ELEVEN

Christie jolted upright to see an older man, face lined from the sun and hard work, standing there. She didn’t recognize him from the last time she’d been at the winery.

His strong voice carried through the window. “Are you okay?”

She started to roll her window down and then thought better of it. “Yes, I’m fine. I just came to see if Abby was here.” Thankfully, where she’d bruised her face was the opposite side from the window or it could bring on some questions she didn’t feel confident answering.

He continued, “She’s out for a few days, taking some time to think about the next steps for the winery. Can I give her a message?”

“If you’ll let her know that I stopped by. Christie. Christie Taylor.”

“From the equine rescue?”

Christie nodded. “Yes, you know of it?”

“Yes, it’s been an immense help for my grandson. He does equine therapy there. Thanks for doing what you do. We were all so worried about him after he came back.” He stopped, his jaw clenching at what must have been some tough emotion wanting to break through. “Anyway, thank you. It truly saved his life.” He pressed his lips together before touching the brim of his cowboy hat. “I’ll let Abby know you stopped by.”

He made to walk away from the truck when a thought came to Christie. She let her window down. “Excuse me. There was a man that had an accident before the one with Abby’s husband. Did they fix whatever had caused the problem?”

“I guess you could say that. Abby’s husband shoved him, and he fell, causing him to cut his head.” His expression turned, making Christie realize he hadn’t meant to say that.

“They were in a fight?”

“Sorry, ma’am but I don’t like talking ill about the dead. Now I best be off.” He made to walk away from the truck.

“I certainly understand.” She’d turned toward him, forgetting the scrapes on her face.

He squinted at her, and she twisted her body so that she faced away and down, acting as if she were looking toward the key area. She glanced up as he nodded and walked toward the front of the building.

Whew. That was close. That’s when Christie realized that there wasn’t any other vehicle in the parking lot with her. So where had he come from? There must be another area where people working at the winery parked. If she’d known that, she might have been able to see who’d been there when she’d been attacked.

Learning that the two men had been fighting made Christie wonder what had caused the incident. However, it also meant that he hadn’t been hurt in the same way that Dax may have sustained his injuries. Yet, if there’d been bad blood between the two men, why hadn’t he been fired?

It didn’t make sense that Dax would keep him on. Unless Dax was the one who’d started the fight and didn’t want to have Cal create even more trouble. But for now, she needed to head home so she could take stock of her injuries.
